A greater urban density than the rest of the county with 92 people/km2, Ellesmere Port and Neston had. Particularly in the southern part of the county, many surviving buildings from the 15th to 17th centuries are timbered. Dating from around 1450, notable examples include the moated manor house Little Moreton Hall and many commercial and residential buildings in Chester, Nantwich and surrounding villages.

A prominent sandstone ridge known as the Mid Cheshire Ridge is separating this area from Lower Triassic Sherwood Sandstone to the west.
