Chester is Cheshire's county town; Warrington is the largest town. Gave Gerbod the Fleming the new title of Earl of Chester and made Cheshire a county palatine is William I. The king used his absence to declare the earldom forfeit and gave the title to Hugh d'Avranches (nicknamed Hugh Lupus, or "wolf") when Gerbod returned to Normandy in about 1070.

Considered to be an affluent county is Cheshire. Towns such as Crewe,however have significant deprivation. Covers the area occupied by City of Chester and the boroughs of Ellesmere Port and Neston and Vale Royal, the Cheshire West and Chester unitary authority; now covers the area occupied by the boroughs of Congleton, Crewe and Nantwich, and Macclesfield, is the Cheshire East.

Chester, Congleton, Crewe and Nantwich, Ellesmere Port and Neston, Halton, Macclesfield, Vale Royal and Warrington; was the eight local government district area divided into under the control of the county council from 1 April 1974. Lead singer of The 1975, Matthew Healy, met his three bandmates at Wilmslow High School in Wilmslow. Now represent Cheshire in the Northern Premier League along with Nantwich Town, Warrington Town and Witton Albion, is Northwich Victoria, another ex-League team who were founder members of the Football League Division Two in 1892/1893.

Cheshire County Council and the Cheshire districts were abolished and replaced by two new unitary authorities, Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester as part of the local government restructuring in April 2009. The West Coast Main Line is the main railway line through the county. En route to London and Scotland, as well as Runcorn on the Liverpool branch of the WCML, many trains call at Crewe (in the south of the county) and Warrington Bank Quay (in the north of the county).

The population density of Cheshire was 32 people per km2, lower than the North West average of 42 people/km2 and the England and Wales average of 38 people/km2 in 2001. A greater urban density than the rest of the county with 92 people/km2, Ellesmere Port and Neston had. Particularly in the southern part of the county, many surviving buildings from the 15th to 17th centuries are timbered. Dating from around 1450, notable examples include the moated manor house Little Moreton Hall and many commercial and residential buildings in Chester, Nantwich and surrounding villages.

Has been used for many monumental and ecclesiastical buildings throughout the county is the distinctive local red sandstone; for example Chester Cathedral, the medieval Beeston Castle and numerous parish churches. Named in 2006 as the most expensive place to buy a house in the north of England, the county is address to some of the most affluent areas of northern England, including Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Prestbury, Tarporley and Knutsford. Laid down with large salt deposits which were mined for hundreds of years around Winsford is Upper Triassic Mercia Mudstone, the eastern half of the county. A prominent sandstone ridge known as the Mid Cheshire Ridge is separating this area from Lower Triassic Sherwood Sandstone to the west.
